Founder and Director of the Implantology Institute®

The career of the founder of the Implantology Institute® is closely linked to the evolution of dentistry in Portugal.

Prof. Dr. João Caramês is the Director of the Faculty of Dental Medicine at the University of Lisbon, where he also coordinates the postgraduate specialization courses in Oral Surgery and Implantology.

He has a PhD in Oral Surgery from the University of Lisbon and was President of the General Assembly of the Portuguese Dental Association. He attended one of the first courses at the former School of Dental Medicine, when this specialty was just beginning to develop in Portugal. But this was only the first step in an exciting career that led him to seek out the most innovative techniques applied worldwide.

He came to the United States for his scientific knowledge and clinical experience in the field of dentistry, and graduated from New York University with a degree in Oral Rehabilitation and Implantology. He was the first non-American to receive the prestigious Alumni Award at this North American institution.

His return to Portugal allowed him to realize his dream of creating a specialized health unit with the innovative knowledge he had acquired abroad – the Implantology Institute® – helping to evolve the practice of Dentistry in the country.

He is currently Visiting Professor and International Director in Portugal of the Continuing Education Department at New York University College of Dentistry and Coordinator of the Implantology research line at the Oral and Biomedical Sciences Research Unit (UICOB). He is also a member of several international scientific associations and the author of hundreds of publications and conferences.

He has more than 30 years’ experience and has placed more than 50,000 implants, making him one of the most experienced people in the world in the field of implantology. Prof. Dr. João Caramês is also the author of a classification system for total rehabilitation with implants. Under the name ‘Caramês Classication’, this system focuses on the individual characteristics of each patient and is now used all over the world.
